Prediction of magnetic storm events using the Dst index

چکیده
This paper provides a method to predict magnetic storm events based on the time series of the Dst index over the period 1981–2002. This method is based on the multiple scaling of the measure representation of the Dst time series. This measure is modeled as a recurrent iterated function system, which leads to a method to predict storm patterns included in its attractor. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the method in outside-sample forecasts.

Analysis of the 3–7 October 2000 and 15–24 April 2002 geomagnetic storms with an optimized nonlinear dynamical model
[1] A computationally optimized low-dimensional nonlinear dynamical model of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system called WINDMI is used to analyze two large geomagnetic storm events, 3–7 October 2000 and 15–24 April 2002. These two important storms share common features such as the passage of magnetic clouds, shock events from coronal mass ejections, triggered substorms, and intervals of sawtoot...
متن کاملPrediction of Geomagnetic Storms Associated With Halo CMEs of January and April 1997
The 6 January 1997 and 7 April 1997 halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were associated with interplanetary magnetic clouds observed by WIND that led to increased geomagnetic storm activity as indicated by the hourly Dst index. A recently developed storm-prediction method is retrospectively applied to these two solar wind (SW) structures. The results are described in detail. Had the algorithm be...

A wavelet-based index of storm activity (WISA) has been recently developed [Jach, A., Kokoszka, P., Sojka, L., Zhu, L., 2006. Wavelet-based index of magnetic storm activity. Journal of Geophysical Research 111, A09215, doi:10.1029/2006JA011635] to complement the traditional Dst index. The new index can be computed automatically by using the wavelet-based statistical procedure without human inte...
متن کاملPrediction of Magnetic Storms by Nonlinear
The strong correlation between magnetic storms and southward interplanetary magnetic eld (IMF) is well known from linear prediction lter studies using the Dst and IMF data. However, the linear lters change signiicantly from one storm to another and thus are limited in their predicting ability. Previous studies have indicated nonlinearity in the magneto-spheric response as the ring current decay...
متن کاملModeling of 1–2 September 1859 super magnetic storm
Based on an estimated solar wind condition around 1–2 September 1859, we were able to reproduce the Carrington magnetic storm magnetometer record, with the H-component depression of 1600 nT, made at Colaba Observatory in Mumbai, India. We used an updated Dst prediction model from Temerin and Li (2002), which provides a prediction efficiency of 0.91 for 1995– 2002 interval using a fixed set of m...
